Rainbow Daze
This series was an exercise in control and playfulness. Like the Nicolas Bourriaud quote states, “Somebody sees an orange rabbit on my shoulder, but I can't see it. So discussion weakens and shrinks. To find a negotiating space, I must pretend to see this orange rabbit on my shoulder. ... So the goal of art is to reduce the mechanical share in us. Its aim is to destroy any a prior agreement about what is perceived.” (80). My images seek to use slight distortion of what is perceived by manipulating objects and color. Like the orange rabbit, I also included specific, odd objects to personify the metaphor of mystery and understanding. I wanted to intervene into reality and make those objects exist for the viewer, things like blue bananas, a pink martini, or an all-red bouquet. I wanted to model my visual style for this shoot after some troupes used in social media images and twist it with art historical references to pop art and monotone painterly pieces like those found in the Blue or Rose Periods.
